A Super Bowl-worthy game plan to tackle breast cancer

Breast cancer has claimed the lives of some 400,000 Americans in the last 10 years alone. That’s 400,000 families who have endured the loss of a mother, daughter, sister or other loved one.

Despite decades of research and untold dollars dedicated to the fight against this insidious disease, breast cancer continues to inflict unspeakable suffering. Our medical and scientific communities have yet to answer the most pressing, basic question: What makes healthy breast cells become cancerous?

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Tissue Bank at the IU Simon Cancer Center (Komen Tissue Bank) is the only repository of healthy breast tissue in the world. These precious tissue samples—donated by selfless women intent on eradicating the threat of breast cancer—allow researchers around the globe to study how breast cancer forms and progresses.

The 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee partnered with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Tissue Bank at the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center (Komen Tissue Bank or KTB) in an effort to put an international spotlight upon the KTB. Recognizing that rather than being just a game, the Super Bowl is an opportunity to establish a meaningful legacy, the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee launched Indy’s Super Cure. The goals of this ambitious initiative were:

  • To increase the number of healthy breast tissue donors, especially from diverse backgrounds,
  • To raise awareness of this vital tool among cancer researchers, and
  • To generate philanthropic funds to ensure the Bank will flourish for years to come.

We are thrilled to announce that the venture was hugely successful, and is still reaping a positive reward.

Through Indy’s Super Cure and the Komen Tissue Bank, we experienced an international impact and increased hope that our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends must no longer live with the fear of breast cancer. We invited you to support this effort.

The Komen Tissue Bank is allowing researchers, for the first time ever, to compare healthy breast cells to ones that have become cancerous. By investigating how the transformation occurs, we hope to glean precious information that can be used to prevent breast cancer. Notably, the healthy tissue that is collected is shared with researchers around the world, who agree to make their data public to aid other scientists.

Our goal was to raise $1 million; we reached it and then some.  These funds will be used to stimulate, fund and support additional research projects as well as ensure the continued existence of the Komen Tissue Bank.

The Bank is now funded by Susan G. Komen for the Cure® through April 2013. We hope that the increased attention brought to this valuable resource will allow it to receive dependable, sustained funding for the long term so that researchers will continue to have access to its samples.

You may still contribute by clicking the Give Now button on this page. You will receive a tax/gift receipt from the IU Foundation for your gift to the Komen Tissue Bank/Indy’s Super Cure.

Of course, the greatest benefit is knowing that you are contributing to our knowledge and understanding of breast cancer. In so doing, you are helping to ensure that, one day, we will live in a world where breast cancer no longer robs us of the women we love.
